Funding and Fellowships

The deadline has passed for the 2009 SASLI FLAS and Fee Remission applications. Please visit our site in late October 2009, for 2010 applications.

For information about the two funding options offered by SASLI, follow the links below:

1. SASLI FLAS (graduate students only)

2. FEE Remission (available to all students)

SASLI DOES NOT accept Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) grants.

Graduate students at the University of Wisconsin may also apply for a Center for South Asia FLAS.

SASLI FLAS Fellowship

SASLI FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships) are provided by the U.S. Department of Education. A FLAS fellowship for SASLI covers the program fee as well as a fixed stipend. Fellowships are awarded based on a national competition and are open to graduate students who are or will be registered at any institution in the United States for the fall semester following the summer during which they will attend SASLI, and who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. SASLI FLAS fellowships are only available for study at SASLI.

Please note that if you are a student from an institution that has a National Resource Center for South Asia, you may apply for both a SASLI FLAS and a FLAS at your home institution. For information regarding their home institution FLAS, students should contact their local advisors.

The consortium member institutions are: Southern Asian Institute (Columbia University), South Asia Program (Cornell University), South Asia Center (Syracuse University), Center for Asia Studies (UC-Berkeley), South Asia at Chicago (University of Chicago), Center for South Asian Studies (University of Michigan), North Carolina Center for South Asia Studies (North Carolina State University, Duke University, University of North Carolina), South Asian Studies (University of Pennsylvania), South Asia Institute (University of Texas-Austin), South Asia Center (University of Washington-Seattle), Center for South Asia (University of Wisconsin-Madison).

For more information on SASLI FLAS applications see our FAQ pages.

Please note that SASLI FLAS Fellowships cannot be used for the study of Sanskrit.

SASLI Fee Remission

All SASLI students are eligible to apply for the SASLI Fee Remission (scholarship). The fee remission covers part or all of the program fee, but does not include a stipend. The review process is competitive and based on financial need and academic/other reasons language study is necessary.

For more information on SASLI fee remission applications see our FAQ pages.
