FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES (FLAS) FELLOWSHIPS
A number of summer fellowships will be available from the South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI)
for intensive foreign language study during the summer of 2010. These fellowships are made possible through the consortium of South Asia National Resource Centers at: Columbia University, Cornell University, the North Carolina Center for South Asia Studies, Syracuse University, The University of California-Berkeley, The University of Chicago, The University of Michigan, The University of Pennsylvania, The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Virginia-Charlottesville, The University of Washington-Seattle, and The University of Wisconsin-Madison.
YOU MUST BE enrolled for SASLI 2010 to be eligible to receive a SASLI FLAS. Please make sure that you have applied to SASLI by the FLAS application deadline.
SASLI FLAS awards will be made to students enrolled in SASLI 2010 for one of the following courses:
ELEMENTARY AND INTERMEDIATE LEVELS:
Bengali * Gujarati * Hindi * Malayalam * Marathi * Nepali * Pashto* Punjabi * Sinhala
Tamil * Telugu * Tibetan * Urdu*
ADVANCED LEVEL:
Nepali *
Note: Dissertators are given the lowest priority for summer FLAS. We recommend that dissertators find other funding sources.
Note: SASLI FLAS fellowships are not currently available for the study of Sanskrit. Stay tuned for further information regarding FLAS eligibility for 2010.
Summer FLAS recipients are required to enroll in a course of modern language study equivalent to one full academic year of study. No area studies course is required or allowed. SASLI courses are the equivalent of a full academic year of study. FLAS awards will pay a fixed stipend amount plus the SASLI program fee (including segregated fees). SASLI FLAS are not available for study outside of SASLI.
Students from any field and any U.S. university are encouraged to apply. Eligibility is limited to students who are currently enrolled in graduate or professional (business, journalism, law, or medicine) programs. In some cases, professional elementary and secondary teachers, and post-secondary faculty may be considered. Recipients must be U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents. Priority will be given to applicants with good academic records who can best demonstrate the need for intensive language study in the summer as a part of their total program. No outside employment is allowed during the period of the intensive language course.
ELIGIBILITY
- Only U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents are eligible to apply for FLAS Fellowships.
- Applicants must have SASLI 2010 enrolled student status (this means you have filled out the SASLI online application by the FLAS application deadline).
- Any "Incomplete" on a student's transcript when the FLAS Selection Committee meets renders the student ineligible for a FLAS Fellowship.
A summer FLAS must be the equivalent of one full academic year of study (2 semesters). All SASLI courses meet this requirement.
Additional note: The U.S. Department of Education Title VI Program (funding agency for FLAS) requires that the FLAS application process is available to graduate students (U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents) from any institution in the U.S. We are also encouraged to fund students broadly across disciplines and departments.
METHOD FOR RANKINGS
SASLI FLAS applications are evaluated by a faculty Review and Ranking Committee, comprised of one faculty member from each participating SASLI Consortium NRC member. The following application materials will be given equal weight:
- Past academic performance based on the transcripts and GRE scores submitted by the applicant (note that these are annual competitions, individual performance is measured against the performance of other applicants).
- The one-page applicant statement of purpose, plus answers to the questions on the applicant form (note that career goals are requested on the application).
- Letters of recommendation. (Note that 2 non-language and 1 language reference are requested. The language reference will be used to determine an applicant's ability to learn a language. Previous study of a South Asian language is not required.)
PRIORITIES FOR RANKINGS
Applications are not ranked with preference for language or disciplinary study. All applicants, regardless of the language of the application or discipline of study are evaluated based on the criteria noted above.
LANGUAGE OF APPLICATION
Applicants must demonstrate that the language of application is significant to their degree and career goals. Please use the one-page statement of purpose to articulate the need for language study. FLAS recipients may not change the language of study after awards are announced.
STUDENT FINANCIAL STATUS WITH REGARD TO RANKINGS
A student's financial situation is not an allowable consideration for FLAS Fellowships.
INFORMATION ON STUDENT RANKINGS
FLAS rankings are private information and are not posted or conveyed in any way as public information. To protect applicant privacy, an individual may inquire from the FLAS Coordinator as to his or her rank, but will not be given additional information such as total number of applicants or the rank of any other individual. The FLAS coordinator may be able to give a general idea as to the competitiveness of an annual competition and the likeliness of an award to an individual applicant who requests that information.
