Fellowship and Funding Questions

FLAS Questions:

Q:Who should I contact regarding SASLI FLAS applications?
A:
The SASLI program coordinator, Laura Hammond, is the person to contact for all your FLAS questions. You can email her at ljhammond@wisc.edu

Q: Can I receive a SASLI FLAS if I have already received one?
A:
There is no limit on the number of SASLI FLAS you may receive. For the SASLI FLAS, there is no restriction on prior academic year FLAS that would limit your eligibility. However, if your institution offers a FLAS competition, you must check with your local FLAS coordinator regarding any FLAS restrictions they may have (including the SASLI FLAS).

Q: Can I apply for both the National Resource Center FLAS at my home institution and the SASLI FLAS at the same time?
A:
Yes, if you are a graduate student from an institution that offers summer FLAS, you may apply to your home institution FLAS as well as a SASLI FLAS.

Q: I have applied for graduate school, but am waiting for an acceptance, can I apply for the SASLI FLAS?
A:
Yes, if you are awarded a SASLI FLAS, you must show proof of your acceptance into a graduate program prior to receiving the award.

Q: How do I know if my institution offers a FLAS award?
A:
Please check the SASLI home page for the links to all the SASLI consortium member institutions. If your institution is listed, there may be summer FLAS awards and you should contact the FLAS coordinator at your institution.

Q: If I am not eligible for a FLAS, what funding options do I have?
A:
You may apply for the SASLI fee remission (for application, click here). You may contact the Madison Financial aid office, but funding options are limited. If you are a student at another university or college, your best resource for funding would be your home institution's financial aid office.

Q:If I am awarded a FLAS, how and when do I get the award?
A: The award will be split into two payments, one payment will be sent directly to the University of Wisconsin Bursar's office and will cover the program fee. The remainder of the FLAS award will be issued to you as a check. This check will be available after the first semester of study at SASLI has been completed.

Q:Do I need to have all my supporting material in the SASLI office by the deadline?
A: Yes.

Q:How many students apply for a SALI FLAS and how many are awarded ?
A: The SASLI FLAS is competitive, with typically 40-50 applications received. We will have a minimum of 10 awards, with likely up to 15 awards.

SASLI Fee Remission Questions:

Q:Who should I contact regarding SASLI Fee Remission?
A:
The SASLI program assistant, Grace Lorentz, is the person to contact for all your fee remission questions. You can email her at sasli@southasia.wisc.edu

Q:
Can anyone apply for the fee remission?
A: Yes. Anyone who has filled out an application to SASLI may apply for the fee remission. Please note that if you are offered a FLAS, you will not be able to receive a fee remission.

Q:
What if I don't have my letters of recommendation in by the deadline for the FLAS and/or the fee remission?
A: Your application will be processed pending the letters of recommendation. Please encourage your referees to get their letters into our office as soon as possible.

Q:
Can I use the same letters of recommendation for my FLAS application and my fee remission application?
A: Yes, but you must supply an extra copy of the letter, or ask your referee to supply the original plus one copy.

Q:What amount of fee remissions are typically offered?
A: The fee remissions vary. There are limited offers of full program fee remissions, and the rest are partial or half fee remissions.

Q:How do I know if the FLAS or fee remission check has been credited to my student account?
A: You may check your tuition bill by logging onto the MY UW portal (my.wisc.edu/portal). Click on your financial tab. Here it will list your tuition owed and any fellowship monies already posted to your account.
