First Four weeks - Introduction to Tibetan concepts, Grammar and syntax of spoken and written Tibetan for beginners.
Second Four weeks - As the course progresses students will be learning more Grammar, syntax and structures through Tibetan short stories, proverbs, cross cultural knowledge and information to improve comprehension and communication skills.
In the first part of the course, the Tibetan Language is introduced by means of phonetic script which is slowly replaced by the Tibetan alphabet, as the course progresses. As the students learn the Tibetan Language, they are entering into a new world of sound and experience, and it is of vital importance that they learn early to feel at home in it. Extensive drill sessions in the afternoon encourage students to speak, even with a limited vocabulary, and to do so with comfort, confidence and ease. Knowledge of basic syntactic structures and vocabulary is emphasized in the morning session, and this is reinforced during the afternoon drills. Social interactions with Tibetans living in the Madison area and trips to the Tibetan monastery in Deer Park give the students some sense of orientation regarding Tibetan culture.
